MOUNT CLARE — The Elkins golfers opened the season in the WVGA Invitational Thursday at Bel Meadow Country Club.

A total of 23 teams and 96 golfers from around the state competed in the event, which was won by Hurricane with a score of 16-over -par 232.

The Tigers were led by Spanish exchange student Javier Crespo-Gomez, who shot a 4-over-par 76.

Drew Hinzman (90), Lucas D’Angelo (94), and Dylan Hinzman (95) rounded out the scoring for Elkins.

“Playing against teams from all over the state is a great way to find out where we are,” Tigers coach Dave Baird said. “Javier hit the ball extremely well. He missed a lot of putts which ultimately was the difference why he didn’t take first overall.”

Baird was happy with his squad’s performance in the season debut.

“Drew, Lucas and Dylan all had a lot of good holes today,” he said. “They just found a couple of big numbers on some holes which eventually add up.

“I love the potential this team has this year, especially with a lot of underclassman that are joining our veterans that played today.”

Each school had a team of four players, with the best three scores counting as the team’s total score.

The Tigers tied Parkersburg for 19th with a 44-over-par, while Buckhannon-Upshur was 18th (+72) and Philip Barbour 20th (+74).

Hurricane’s Savannah Hawkins took low-medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73.

The Tigers open the home portion of the schedule Wednesday against Lincoln and Preston.

In a junior varsity match Wednesday at Moorefield, Elkins was led by Talia Nucilli with a 50 and Isaac Shepler’s 59.

The Tiger JV team visits Buckhannon-Upshur on Monday.
